Wilson County Substance Prevention Coalition

April 2007 marked the birth of the Wilson County Substance Prevention Coalition. Early 2007, Wilson Families In Action (WFA) pulled together all of its resources and called upon Wilson County agencies, from law enforcement to city and county managers to the faith community and school system, to be a part of the first meeting of the Coalition on April 12th. On that day, many came and WFA’s hard work was realized as the Chairman of the Board of Education, the County Manager, and other key stakeholders made their stand to address Substance Misuse in Wilson County. Within a year of existence the Coalition established a director, an executive board, and bylaws.

The Coalition collects data through the Pride Survey performed every two years and through data sharing from partner organizations. This data is utilized to form our fluid strategic plan.

Programs such as Red Ribbon Week, Family Day, Talk It Up. Lock It Up!, Operation Medicine Drop, and a Safe Homes Initiative have been born, advocated for, and implemented. The Coalition has supported efforts such as intranasal naloxone kit provisions for our law enforcement, the Syringe Services Program, and the Hope Alliance of Wilson.

In most recent years, the Coalition has expanded its impact on Substance Use Disorder prevention through a variety of community level strategies and most recently connecting Prevention with Recovery efforts to complete the continuum of care for our community members who struggle with this disease and to connect them with the opportunities available to become an advocate for continued prevention initiatives.
